What You Can and Cannot Know about a Person Through the Internet

As is often sensationalized, it is possible that the person to whom you are communicating might not be who he or she claims, but it is also true that this can and does happen in traditional relationships as well. If you have been communicating over a relatively long period of time, and if you have spoken on the phone a number of times, there is probably no more risk in being deceived in that way than there would be in a traditional situation.

That said, there are some things unique to this form of communication that you can and cannot know about the other person, not common to tratitional relationships:

You often can know:

How the person thinks inside; his or her inner strengths, fears, insecurities, etc. It often takes much longer to discover this information in face-to-face settings.
How well the person writes.
If you are attracted to the person's mind, arguably the most important and pragmatic part of human relationships.
What the person generally looks like, although there is always the possibility that you are only allowed to see the person from the most flattering angles and in the most complimentary situations.

You often cannot know:

Whether each of you can pick up on the subtlties of each other's non-verbal communications
If you are attracted to each other's scent, and overall physical presence
Whether you each might have various annoying physical habits that could grate on each other's nerves
What the person looks like when he or she gets up in the morning.
